Art Director – Character Art - AAA Games
Ourclient provides outsourced art production to game studios and publishers, working on premium (AAA/AA) titles. They need a senior figure to take charge oftheir photorealistic character art discipline: shaping how the group works, spotting where the service can grow, and keeping delivery on track across projects. This is not a purely managerial post — whoever takes it is expected to be the resident expert on character build quality, able to dig into a broken pipeline personally and, when the team needs an extra pair of hands, contribute production work directly rather than only directing from above.
General Information
• Sector: outsourced art production for premium video games
• Contract: permanent, full-time
• Working pattern: fully remote, with candidates needing to share at least six working hours a day with a European-based team
• Team size: candidates should have run a group in the 10–20+ range previously; ten direct reports is the minimum bar for this post
Tasks and Deliverables
• Set the multi-year direction for the photo-realistic character discipline and agree working standards with the leads underneath you
• Act as final word on quality and technique for character work, personally diagnosing pipeline breakdowns when they crop up
• Size and shape the team against upcoming production demand and hiring targets
• Sit on the hiring panel: build test assignments, run technical interviews, and assess incoming candidates
• Recruit, onboard, and review the leads who report to you, including running structured development and mentoring plans for them
• Contribute to project planning, staffing, and estimating, and personally sign off on key deliverables before they go out
• Step in on technical, creative, or people problems within the team, and join client conversations when a project needs kicking off, clarifying, or unblocking
• Be ready to roll up your sleeves on actual character work when capacity or a tricky asset calls for it — this is a working leader, not a purely supervisory one
Required Experience
• A strong portfolio of photorealistic game characters built for premium (AAA-tier) productions, with clear examples of realistic clothing and costume work specifically
• Solid working knowledge of Marvelous Designer for garment creation
• 3+ years leading a character art team, as a lead, project lead, or comparable role
• Track record managing a team of roughly 10–20 artists or more, with ten as a firm minimum
• Rounded knowledge of character art from both the creative and technical side, backed by solid industry experience
• A sharp eye for quality and craft, and the ability to give (and take) feedback that actually moves workforward
• Comfortable thinking long-term about team growth while still being hands-on enough to solve a hard problem under pressure
• Strong people-management, organisational, and communication skills
Nice to Have
• A history of introducing new tools or software to speed up a production pipeline
• Experience writing upprocess documentation, style guides, or structured onboarding materials for a team
• Comfortable representing your team directly in client-facing meetings and strategic conversations
